At the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, presented by Purina® Pro Plan®, thousands of dogs compete to take the title of Best in Show. Each AKC-recognized breed falls into one of seven groups. The Herding Group is the 4th Group to take the ring, competing on the first night of the dog show.
The AKC Herding Group was created in 1983 and is the newest AKC classification. Before that, the dogs in this group belonged in the Working Group.
All breeds in the Herding Group share the fabulous ability to control the movement of other animals. However, the vast majority of herding dogs, as household pets, never cross paths with a farm animal. Nevertheless, pure instinct prompts many of these dogs to gently herd their owners, and especially the children of the family. In general, these intelligent dogs make excellent companions and respond beautifully to training exercises.
Dogs in the AKC Herding Group include the Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Polish Lowland Sheepdog and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Fun Facts about the Herding Group
The low-set Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an impressive, and maybe even surprising, herding dog. Standing about one foot tall at the shoulders, a Corgi can drive a herd of cows many times its size to pasture by leaping and nipping at their heels.
The German Shepherd Dog is the winningest breed in the AKC Herding Group with 10 Group wins – the most recent being in 2016.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has the most consecutive wins, with 3 (2000-2002).
Since 1983, only 2 Best In Show Winners have come from the Herding Group; both were German Shepherd Dogs.
The Pumi is the newest breed in the Herding Group, making its first WKC appearance last year.
In 2008, the Australian Shepherd won the Group competition.
