Over 2700 dogs travel from around the world to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, presented by Purina® Pro Plan®. Each of the 202 breeds fall into one of seven AKC Groups. The AKC Hound Group takes the ring first on night one of the world’s greatest dog show.

Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting, which is why they were originally classified as Sporting dogs, but in 1930 the AKC Hound Group was born.

Though the dogs in the Hound Group share hunting traits, they’re a diverse lot. Some dogs in the Hound Group use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Some hounds bring down the game themselves or hold it at bay until the hunter arrives, while others locate the game by tracking its scent. Sight hounds hunt by sight, scent hounds by tracking with their superior olfactory senses. Some of the dogs in the AKC Hound Group share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as “baying.”

Dogs in the AKC Hound Group include the Basset Hound, Beagle (13” and 15” varieties), Bloodhound, Dachshund (Longhaired, Smooth and Wirehaired varieties), Greyhound and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Fun Facts about the Hound Group

In 2015, Miss P, a Beagle (15 in), became the 9th Best In Show Champion in a row to be fueled by Purina® Pro Plan®.

Miss P’s uncle, Uno, also won Best in Show in 2008 and was also fed Purina® Pro Plan®.

The Greyhound is the “winningest” breed in the Hound Group, with 13 Group wins.*

6 Best In Show Winners have come from the Hound Group* - including the Afghan Hound, the Beagle, the Scottish Deerhound and the Whippet.

Last year a Norwegian Elkhound fueled by Purina® Pro Plan® won the Group.

The Bloodhound’s name refers to the pure-blood breeding of the hound and has nothing to do with its tracking abilities.

The handler or owner of these champions may have received Purina® Pro Plan® dog food as Purina ambassadors.
