For two days in February, dogs come from around the world to compete in New York City at the “world’s greatest dog show”: the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, presented by Purina® Pro Plan®. The Group competitions take place over two nights, with Best in Show being announced Tuesday. The Sporting Group opens night 2 with their Group competition.
The AKC Sporting Group is comprised of gun dogs that were developed to assist the hunter. These dogs are remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, and are generally naturally active, alert and have stable temperaments.
Different breeds perform different jobs in the field. Breeds like the Cocker Spaniel flush the bird, German Shorthaired Pointers and Irish Setters point and mark the game, and breeds like the Golden Retriever recover the game from land or water.
Fun Facts about the AKC Sporting Group
In 2016, CJ, a German Shorthaired Pointer, became the 10th consecutive Best In Show Champion to be fueled by Purina® Pro Plan®.*
2 other German Shorthaired Pointers have won Best In Show.
20 Best In Show Winners have come from the AKC Sporting Group.
The Cocker Spaniel (Black), Pointer and the Gordon Setter are tied with the most consecutive Group wins, at 3 wins each.
Although they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S., the Golden Retriever has never won Best in Show.
* The handler or owner of these champions may have received Pro Plan dog food as Purina ambassadors.
