Getting Started

 • When I begin feeding SIMPLY FIT™, what’s the best way to transition my pet from their old food?

If you quickly switch your pet from one food to another, you run the risk of stomach upset. That’s why it’s important to introduce your pet to a new food slowly over the course of seven (7) days. Gradually replace the old food with the SIMPLY FIT™ Metabolic Maintenance (blue bag), increasing the amount every 1-2 days until you are feeding 100% of the Metabolic Maintenance formula on day 7. After transitioning to the SIMPLY FIT™ system, it is not necessary to go through a similar transition when switching between the Metabolic Maintenance (blue bag) and Fat Burn (red bag).

 • What color bag should I start with?

Begin with the blue bag, Metabolic Maintenance, and feed the recommended amount each day for 7 days. In your first week, the transition period counts as your first 7 days.

For the second week, switch to Fat Burn, in the red bag. Feed based on feeding instructions exclusively. And remember, no transition is needed between the two SIMPLY FIT™ formulas. Continue this week-over-week feeding pattern until ideal body condition is reached.

Remember to weigh your pet at the start of the system, so you can track their progress throughout the journey.

 • How should I store the two SIMPLY FIT™, formulas?

Store SIMPLY FIT™ in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Do not mix the kibble, and make sure the Metabolic Maintenance and Fat Burn formulas stay separate and easily identifiable.

 • What should I expect in the first few days/weeks of feeding SIMPLY FIT™?

Every pet is different, and will tend to lose weight at their own pace. That being said, there are some common things you may be seeing in your pet in the first few weeks of the SIMPLY FIT™ System.

Excitement for the food. SIMPLY FIT™ has a taste pets love, so it is typically an easy transition to the new food.

Gradual changes. Weight loss is a gradual process. The length of time needed to see changes in your pet’s body condition or weight will vary depending upon your pet’s body condition at the start of the system and other factors. You can take photos of your pet at each weigh-in. Try to take the photographs at the same angle/location each time so you can see the difference in your pet’s shape. These pictures can be encouraging as they show progress throughout your pet’s weight loss journey.

Begging. Most likely this behavior is attention-seeking. Reward your pet by giving them extra pets and love, or by feeding them pieces of kibble taken from their daily serving. But please, no extra treats!

 • What tools are available to assist me and my pet in my transition and journey?

 • What is Continuous Calorie Restriction (CCR)?

CCR is the most common form of dietary restriction – daily calorie restriction. This has also been called Chronic Calorie Restriction or Constant Calorie Restriction. This method typically involves reducing energy intake by 15-60% compared with typical daily caloric input.

Sources: German AJ, Holden SL, Bissot T, et al. • What is Intermittent Calorie Restriction (ICR)?

Intermittent Caloric Restriction (ICR) is associated with eating a diet with maintenance requirements for a certain amount of time followed by some amount of caloric restriction and/or fasting.

Our patented SIMPLY FIT™ system is adapted from this initial concept of ICR – for pets, we are using one week of maintenance feeding, followed by one week of caloric restriction and repeated in an alternating manner until ideal Body Condition Score (BCS) is achieved.

Our internal studies in dogs/cats have demonstrated that ICR is 2X More efficient than traditional weight loss method. (Efficiency of weight loss calculated as total kcal consumed during feeding period divided by percent weight loss.)

A review of several human studies has concluded that although CCR and ICR were both equally effective in decreasing body weight and fat mass, ICR may be more effective in the retention of lean body mass at the expense of fat (Varady 2011).

Source: Varady, KA (2011) Intermittent versus daily calorie restriction: which diet regimen is more effective for weight loss? Obesity Reviews; 12:e593-e601

Nestlé Purina® studies in dogs and cats prove that ICR can be an effective alternative to CCR or other traditional methods of weight loss. When used as directed, the ICR system enables all of the weight loss benefits of CCR along with a few additional advantages – less food deprivation, continuously active metabolism, and maintained lean body mass.

 • Do I need to talk to my Vet before starting my pet on SIMPLY FIT™?

It is always advised to speak to your vet before starting a weight loss program. If you both determine SIMPLY FIT™ is right for your pet, you can feel confident knowing SIMPLY FIT™ Metabolic Maintenance and Fat Burn formulas are both complete and balanced nutrition for adult cats & dogs. They are formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food and Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance of adult cats and adult dogs.

This feeding program is meant for adult cats and adult dogs that need to lose weight to achieve an ideal body condition. If you have a kitten/puppy, or a pregnant or nursing cat or dog, you should continue feeding a Pro Plan® Kitten Formula or Pro Plan® Puppy Formula.

 • Can you provide tips on how to help my pet reach his/her weight loss goal?

Healthy weight loss habits include:

A healthy weight loss system, like the SIMPLY FIT™ system

Measure food using a standard 8 oz. measuring cup to ensure the correct amount is fed during each feeding

Making sure your pet gets plenty of daily exercise either through regular walks or play

Exercise should be increased gradually

Daily walks help burn energy and work off excess weight

Cutting out tables scraps and other treats that contribute unwanted calories

Avoiding feeding other foods, including wet foods

Aim to lose weight gradually (healthy weight loss is no more than 2% every two weeks)

Slow and steady weight loss is best for your pet and more likely to result in long-lasting weight loss.

Losing weight will take significant time and effort, but that effort will be hugely worth it in health benefits in the long-run.

Product Information

 • What are the ingredients in SIMPLY FIT™?

You can find the complete list of ingredients in the SIMPLY FIT™ Dog Formula on the product page.

You can find the complete list of ingredients in the SIMPLY FIT™ Cat Formula on theproduct page.

 • My pet is on a special diet, can I still feed SIMPLY FIT™?

If you have any concerns or questions, consult your veterinarian to determine if SIMPLY FIT™ is an appropriate diet for your pet. Your veterinarian can help you choose the right food and dietary approach for the specific condition of your pet. Pets on a therapeutic diet should not switch over without a recommendation from a veterinarian.

 • How do the blue and red bags maintain metabolism?

Unlike the traditional weight loss method of Continuous Calorie Restriction (CCR), the SIMPLY FIT™ system works by intermittently changing calorie intake – NOT portion size – to keep your pet’s metabolism active. This approach to weight loss is called Intermittent Calorie Restriction (ICR). The SIMPLY FIT™ system varies caloric intake over time using two separate foods – the blue bag with a base calorie amount (Metabolic Maintenance) and the red bag with 25% fewer calories (Fat Burn) per serving.

Fed on alternating weekly schedules, these two foods work together to promote continuously active metabolism, helping pets lose body fat, maintain lean muscle mass, and reach an ideal body condition.

There is zero guilt with this system because your pet will get the same great taste and amount of food during each daily feeding and weekly feeding period.

 • Is SIMPLY FIT™ available in different sizes?

Yes.

SIMPLY FIT™ Cat is available in 6lb and 13lb options.

SIMPLY FIT™ Dog is available in 13lb and 21.25lb options.

And remember, each box of SIMPLY FIT™ contains 2 bags.

 • Does SIMPLY FIT™ come in a wet food formula? What if my pet prefers wet food?

SIMPLY FIT™ does not have a wet food option available. Remember, this diet is strictly for the purpose of weight loss, and will be fed for a limited amount of time. Feed according to instructions, and upon reaching an ideal body condition, your pet should be able to transition back to a wet food option.

 • How does this compare to other weight management foods?

Unlike the traditional weight loss method of Continuous Calorie Restriction (CCR), which is common to weight management formulas, our system works by changing calorie intake – NOT portion size, to keep your pet’s metabolism active. This approach to weight loss is based on Intermittent Calorie Restriction (ICR), which varies calorie intake over time. Our method uses two foods – one with a base calorie amount (Metabolic Maintenance) and one with 25% fewer calories (Fat Burn) per serving.

Fed on an alternating weekly schedule, these two foods work together to promote continuously active metabolism, helping pets lose body fat, maintain lean muscle mass and reach an ideal body condition.

The SIMPLY FIT™ system is designed for efficiency, not speed. The advantage of the SIMPLY FIT™ system is it allows pets to eat more and still lose the same amount of weight.

 • What's the science behind SIMPLY FIT™ that makes it so effective?

Nestlé Purina studies in dogs and cats prove that ICR can be an effective alternative to CCR or other traditional methods of weight loss. When used as directed, the ICR system enables all of the weight loss benefits of CCR along with a few additional advantages – less food deprivation, continuously active metabolism, and maintained lean body mass.

 • What makes this food different? It says system, what does that mean?

Purina® Pro Plan® SIMPLY FIT™ is a patented breakthrough weight loss system that’s easy to use and more efficient than traditional weight loss methods. (Efficiency of weight loss calculated as total kcal consumed during feeding period divided by percent weight loss.)

Unlike the traditional weight loss method of Continuous Calorie Restriction (CCR), SIMPLY FIT™ works by intermittently changing calorie intake – NOT portion size – to keep your pet’s metabolism active. This approach to weight loss is called Intermittent Calorie Restriction (ICR). Patented by Purina, the SIMPLY FIT™ system varies calorie intake over time using two separate foods – the blue bag with a base calorie amount (Metabolic Maintenance) and the red bag with 25% fewer calories (Fat Burn) per serving.

ICR is more efficient than CCR! Fed on alternating weekly schedules, these two foods work together to promote continuously active metabolism, helping pets lose body fat, maintain lean muscle mass, and reach an ideal body condition.

“System” means that there are two foods designed to be fed in a weekly alternating pattern.

Feeding Instructions

 • For the feeding instructions, is the feeding amount based on what my pet’s current weight is or what I want the desired end weight to be?

The feeding instructions are based on your pet’s current weight. Feeding directions on the package are based on average, fairly active adult pets. However, the exact amount of food your pet requires may vary due to differences in age, activity, and environment. If your pet is not losing weight, he or she may not require as much food per day as suggested by the package feeding amounts.

For more detailed feeding amount information, please visit the SIMPLY FIT™ Dog Product Pageor theSIMPLY FIT™ Cat Product Page.

As you use the SIMPLY FIT™ System, be sure to weigh your pet at the end of each Fat Burn week, and adjust the feeding amount according to the chart.

 • Feeding instructions mention portion sizes by cup. How much is a cup?

For the purposes of feeding, a cup is in reference to an 8oz measuring cup. Be sure the portion is not rounded off, and is instead flat at the required portion amount.

 • How do I use SIMPLY FIT™ if I have more than one dog or cat in my home?

There are a few options to help you manage multiple pets in a household when one pet is on a weight management program. Consider feeding pets in separate locations. Supervise all pets’ meals, and pick up food bowls when your pets are finished eating.

 • The range on feeding instructions say to feed between 1.5 and 2 cups. Which is it for my pet?

Feeding directions on the package are based on average, fairly active adult pets. Typically, the lower feeding amount will correspond with the lowest weight in the range provided and the highest feeding amount will correspond with the highest weight in the range provided. However, the exact amount of food your pet requires may vary due to differences in age, activity, and environment. If your pet is not losing weight, he/she may not require as much food per day as suggested by the package feeding amounts.

For more detailed feeding amount information, please visit the SIMPLY FIT™ product page for the dog formulaor thecat formula.

 • How do I remember when to switch bags?

There are a variety of ways to help you remember when to switch SIMPLY FIT™ bags. First, pick a day that’s easy to remember, like a Sunday. Or, you can sign up for our weekly reminder emails, which will tell you when to switch each week – no remembering necessary.

Just a few more helpful tips:

Have one person in charge of feeding/switching bags, so you don’t overfeed

Keep a feeding/measuring cup in the ‘active’ bag of food you are feeding as a daily reminder of which bag to feed

Download and print a SIMPLY FIT™ Calendar to track your pet’s switch days and progress on paper

 • How long can I feed SIMPLY FIT™ to my pet? Is there a limit?

You should feed SIMPLY FIT™ until your pet has reached an ideal body condition, based on the Body Condition Score (BCS) chart. Need help evaluating your pet’s body condition? Visit ProPlan.com/Simply-Fit and try our Body Condition Score Tool. Once your pet has reached an ideal body condition, find the right food for your pet with myPLAN.

 • Do I need to feed multiple times per day, or just once?

Continue with your typical feeding routine – what matters is the total daily intake. Be sure to adjust the amount you are feeding based on frequency, as the feeding instructions on box are based on TOTAL DAILY requirements.

 • Can I still feed treats?

We strongly recommend that you refrain from treating in any form while using the SIMPLY FIT™ System. Remember, this is for a limited time, and after your pet has reached an ideal body condition, you can resume responsible treating. What may seem like a few extra calories for your pet could be much more based on your pet’s daily caloric needs and could slow their weight loss progress.

Weight Tracking

 • How can I tell if my pet is overweight?

You can ask your veterinarian if your pet is at a healthy weight, or you use our SIMPLY FIT™ Body Condition Score Tool for your cator dog to get an estimate before you go.

 • How do I weigh my pet?

As you can imagine, it isn’t easy to get your pet to sit still on a bathroom scale. We recommend you weigh your pet using these three simple steps:

Step 1 – Weigh yourself.

Step 2- Weigh yourself while holding your pet.

Step 3 – Subtract the two numbers.

If your dog is too heavy to comfortably hold, most veterinarians will gladly weigh your dog for you. Just ask.

 • How often and when should I check my pet's weight?

You should weigh your pet on the day you begin SIMPLY FIT™. Weigh them again at the end of each Fat Burn (red bag) week. As your pet loses weight, remember to adjust their feeding amount based on the Feeding Guidelines Chart.

Keep track of their progress in a notebook – noting the date and your pet’s weight.

Take a picture of your pet to record a visual image and to track your pet’s weight loss progress.

 • How much weight should my dog/cat lose per week?

The aim is to lose weight gradually. This is best for your dog or cat and more likely to result in long-lasting weight loss. Remember, every pet is unique. Slow continuous weight loss is more effective and will reduce the risk of your pet rebounding to its overweight condition, and leads to the best health outcome.

 • It's been a month and I haven't seen any weight loss. Why not?

There are several reasons your pet may not be losing weight as quickly as you had hoped. Confirm that you are feeding the correct amount using an 8oz measuring cup. Also make sure that the amount you feed is level in the cup, not raised. You should also check to be sure no one else in your home is feeding your pet additional food or treats.

Feeding directions are based off of average energy needs of fairly active adult pets. Your individual animal may need fewer calories due to differences in their age, individual metabolic rates, activity levels or environment. If your pet is not losing weight, he/she may not require as much food per day as suggest by the package feeding amounts. For more detailed feeding information, please visit the SIMPLY FIT™ dog product page or theSIMPLY FIT™ cat product page.

 • Why does a little extra weight matter for my pet?

Extra weight can affect the overall health of your pet and increase long-term health costs. One extra pound on a dog or cat is much more significant than a pound on you. Being overweight puts added strain on joints.

While a pound doesn’t sound like much to a 150 lb person, it is significant to a dog or a cat. For example, a 1 lb increase on a 35 lb dog is similar to a 4.29 lb increase on a person. And a 1 lb increase on an 8 lb cat is similar to a 18.75 lb increase on a person.

 • Once my pet has hit the goal weight, do I keep feeding Simply Fit?

No. Once your pet has reached an ideal body condition, you can use myPLAN to get our expert recommendation on the best Pro Plan formula for your pet, and receive $5 off your first bag of Purina Pro Plan.

Continue to weigh your pet regularly and adjust feeding amounts as needed to maintain body weight and condition. Remember that your pet’s daily needs may differ slightly from the feeding amounts on package due to differences in age, activity, and environment. Rebound weight gain is very common in both humans and pets.

 • I don't have a scale at home, how else can I track my pet's progress?

If you don’t have a scale readily available, you can visit your vet to check your pet’s weight. You can learn to perform your own healthy body check to see if your pet is at a health body condition, or use our SIMPLY FIT™ Body Condition Score Tool for cats or our Body Condition Score Tool for dogs as a reference point.

 • What is a BCS?

BCS stands for Body Condition Score, and is designed to help you assess your pet’s body condition. Created by pet care experts, our Body Condition Tool guides you through a hands-on approach to determining if your pet is a healthy size, beyond their weight. Evaluate your cat’s body condition here or your dog’s body condition here.

Pets with an ideal body condition score of 4 (cats) or 4 to 5 (dogs) have:

An obvious waist behind the ribs when viewed from above

A tuck in the belly when viewed from the side

Ribs that are easily felt but not seen

 • My dog has a body shape that's different from the one on the body condition score tool. How do I know what an ideal body condition looks like for my dog?

No matter the type of dog or cat, a pet with an ideal body condition score will have:

An obvious waist behind the ribs when viewed from above

A tuck in the belly when viewed from the side

Ribs that are easily felt but not seen

 • What if my pet is gaining weight instead of losing weight?

If your pet is gaining weight while on SIMPLY FIT™, confirm that you are feeding the correct amount, using an 8oz measuring cup. Also make sure that the amount you feed is level in the cup, not raised. You should also check to be sure no one else in your home is feeding your pet additional food or treats.

Remember that feeding directions are based off of average energy needs of an animal at that weight. Your individual animal may need less calories due to differences in their individual metabolic rates, activity levels or environment.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

 • Is treating allowed while on SIMPLY FIT™?

We strongly recommend that you refrain from treating in any form until your pet is at an ideal body condition. Remember, this is for a limited time, and your pet will be able to receive treats again, after the diet is complete. What may seem like a few extra calories for your pet could be much more given your pet’s daily caloric needs, and could slow their weight loss progress.

 • If I can't give my pet treats, how can I show my pet I care?

There are many ways that you can show your pet you care. Just playing with or petting your dog or cat is a reward for them, as well as quality time together and a good walk. If you’re still wanting to “treat” in some way, you can give your pet ice cubes or pieces of kibble – just subtract the amount from their daily intake.

Remember you are doing this for your pet’s long-term health and happiness, and it’s probably harder on you than it is on your pet. • Will my pet like the taste of SIMPLY FIT™?

We have formulated SIMPLY FIT™ to have a great taste pets love to help encourage successful results.

 • Do I need to incorporate more exercise into my pet's weight loss plan? Any activity ideas to get my pet moving?

Activity is helpful with any weight loss plan. Daily activity helps burn calories and enhances your pet’s overall well-being. Exercise can help strengthen your pet’s muscles, joints and bones and increase energy level, and most importantly, it helps your pet live a happy and healthy life.

Activity Ideas for Cats:

Play!

Move your cat’s litterbox to the basement so they need to do stairs more often

Close off doors during day, then open them later so your cat is excited to explore

Place your cat’s food on a high surface so they need to climb to reach it

Divide your cat’s meals into several small quantities and place them around the house to encourage them to “hunt”

Activity Ideas for Dogs:

Play!

Go on walks

Put a stick on the ground and have your dog walk over it, so he lifts his legs to use more muscles

Perform “puppy push-ups” where you have your dog sit and lay down several times

Try agility courses or playing with a flying disc

 • Would feeding less of my pet's current food have the same effect? Why can't I just cut back on the food I am giving my pet now?

If you simply decrease the portion size of their food, your pet may not be receiving the full amount of nutrients needed for a complete and balanced diet. It could also increase the likelihood that your pet will be hungry, resulting in begging. Unlike the traditional weight loss method of Continuous Calorie Restriction (CCR), which is common to weight management formulas, our system works by changing calorie intake – NOT portion size. This approach to weight loss is based on Intermittent Calorie Restriction (ICR). Our method uses two foods – one with a base calorie amount (Metabolic Maintenance) and one with 25% fewer calories (Fat Burn) per serving. When used as directed, the ICR system enables all of the weight loss benefits of CCR along with a few additional advantages – less food deprivation, continuously active metabolism, and maintained lean body mass.
